Ober Mountain Gatlinburg Review: Tramway, Mountain Coaster, Wildlife & What It’s Really Like in Fall/Winter

When you visit Gatlinburg, you expect a certain type of experience.
You think of:
- Tourist shops
- Mountain views
- Small attractions scattered throughout town
What we didn’t expect was to find something that felt like a full, all-in-one experience sitting right above the city.
That’s exactly what we got with Ober Mountain.
Going into it, we honestly thought it would be just another quick stop. Maybe ride something, look around, and head out. Instead, it turned into one of the most memorable parts of our entire trip – and easily our favorite attraction in Gatlinburg.
The Surprise Factor: It’s Bigger Than You Expect
One of the biggest reasons Ober Mountain stood out to us is simple:
It’s not what you think it is.
From the outside, it sounds like:
- A ski resort
- Maybe a couple rides
- Something seasonal
But once you actually go, you realize it’s a mix of:
- A mountaintop park
- A mini wildlife experience
- Indoor entertainment
- Outdoor adventure rides
All in one place.
It’s the kind of attraction that keeps surprising you the longer you’re there.
The Gondola Ride Up Sets the Tone
Before you even step foot inside, the experience starts with the Ober Mountain Aerial Tramway.
This isn’t just transportation – it’s part of the attraction.
- You board in downtown Gatlinburg
- Slowly rise up into the mountains
- Get wide views of the Smokies
There’s also some history behind it. The tramway has been operating since the 1970s and was originally built to connect the city to what was once primarily a ski resort. It’s one of the largest aerial tram systems in the country, which you can feel when you’re inside – it’s stable, spacious, and designed for groups.
When we visited, it was late fall heading into winter, so there was a light fog hanging over the mountains.
That ended up making the ride even better.
Instead of clear, predictable views, everything felt layered and atmospheric. You’d see parts of the mountains, then they’d disappear into fog, then reappear again. It gave the entire ride this almost cinematic feel – like you were being transported somewhere different, not just higher up.
The Wildlife Encounter: Simple But Worth It
Once you’re at the top, one of the first things you’ll notice is the Wildlife Encounter area.
Now, this isn’t a full-scale zoo – and that’s actually what makes it work.
Instead, it focuses on animals native to the region:
- Black bears
- River otters
- Raccoons
- More!
The setup feels more intentional and less overwhelming than a large zoo. You’re able to move through it quickly, but still feel like you got a real experience out of it.
What stood out to us most was how close you can get. Compared to major zoos, it feels more personal and less crowded, which made it easier to actually enjoy and observe the animals.
It’s not the main reason you go – but it’s a really solid addition that adds more value to your time there.
Indoor Activities: More Important Than You Think
Inside, you’ll find a solid mix of things to do:
- An ice skating rink
- Arcade-style games
- Food and seating areas
- Shops
- A carousel

The ice rink was actually one of the highlights for us. They have support aids you can hold onto while skating – which I fully took advantage of because my balance is terrible. Meanwhile, Katie was out there skating like a pro with no help at all… and at one point she was literally pushing me around the rink while I held onto the support thing.

They also had bumper cars on the ice, which was surprisingly fun. You just glide around and bounce into people. Of course, Katie made it her mission to target me the entire time.

The carousel inside was a nice, slower-paced break from everything else. It’s peaceful, and since it’s elevated, it actually gives you a really good view of the whole indoor area while you ride.
Since we went during that fall-to-winter transition, the temperature outside was definitely cooler. Having a place to step inside, warm up, and still have multiple things to do made a big difference.
It also makes Ober Mountain way more reliable than most attractions in Gatlinburg. Even if the weather isn’t perfect, your day isn’t ruined – you just head inside for a bit, enjoy everything there, then go back out when you’re ready.
Outdoor Attractions: Where It Really Delivers

The outdoor attractions are what truly make Ober Mountain stand out.
The Mountain Coaster (Best Part)
If there’s one thing you do here, make it the alpine coaster.
- You control your own speed
- It winds through the mountain terrain
- It’s open year-round
When we rode it, the fog was still hanging over the mountain – and it completely changed the experience.
It honestly felt surreal.
You’d go around a turn and suddenly everything would be covered in mist, then a few seconds later it would clear just enough to see the track ahead. It gave off this unexpected, almost Jurassic Park-type vibe that we definitely weren’t expecting in Gatlinburg.
It made the ride feel:
- Faster
- More immersive
- More memorable
And it’s one of those things where the environment made it better than it normally would be.
Other Outdoor Options
Beyond the coaster, there are a few other things that add to the experience:
- Scenic chairlift rides
- Seasonal skiing and snowboarding
- Snow tubing during winter
Even without peak snow season, there was still enough going on to keep us busy.
Why It Felt Worth Every Dollar
Let’s talk about something that actually matters – cost vs. value.
Ober Mountain isn’t free, and depending on what you do, it can add up.
But here’s why we felt like it was worth every dime:
1. It’s Multiple Attractions in One
Instead of paying for a ride somewhere else, a separate indoor activity, and or a zoo/animal experience – you’re getting all of them in one easy to navigate location.
2. You Can Spend Real Time There
A lot of Gatlinburg attractions are 30 minute attractions (in-and-outs) – Ober Mountain is different. We spent hours there without feeling like we were forcing it. There was always something else to do, see, or try.
3. The Experience Feels Unique
This was probably the biggest factor.
We’ve done:
- Theme parks
- Mountain attractions
- Scenic rides
But this felt like a mix of all of them, with its own personality.
And the unexpected elements – like the fog during our visit – made it feel even more unique.
Best Time to Visit (Based on Our Experience)
We went in late fall, right before winter fully kicked in, and honestly – it might be one of the best times to go.
Here’s why:
- Cooler weather without extreme cold
- Smaller crowds compared to peak seasons
- Early winter atmosphere starting to build
- Fog and mountain conditions adding character
If you’re planning:
- Fall: Best balance of weather and crowd size
- Winter: Best for snow activities
- Summer: Best for full activity access, but busier
Final Thoughts
If you’re visiting Gatlinburg and trying to decide what’s actually worth your time and money, Ober Mountain should be near the top of your list.
It’s not just another attraction – it’s an experience that keeps building the longer you’re there.
And more than anything, it was the unexpected factor that made it stand out for us.
We went in thinking it would be a quick stop. We left feeling like it was the highlight of the trip.
