A Cozy Thanksgiving Getaway Filled with Mountain Views, Historic Charm, and Holiday Magic
If you’re looking for a mountain getaway that’s close enough for a long weekend but still feels like a true escape, Blue Ridge, Georgia quickly became one of our favorite trips we’ve ever taken.
My wife Katie, our dog Grebee, our friends, and I spent Thanksgiving weekend exploring this charming North Georgia mountain town, and it had everything we love: beautiful scenery, festive holiday decorations, a historic railway, small-town charm, and plenty of outdoor adventures.
What made the trip even better was that Blue Ridge still felt authentic. It wasn’t overly crowded or commercialized – it was simply a welcoming mountain town celebrating the holidays.
First Stop: Lake Blue Ridge
Since we arrived before our Airbnb check-in time, we decided to head over to Lake Blue Ridge with Grebee.
Unlike many mountain lakes throughout the Southeast that are entirely natural, Lake Blue Ridge is actually a reservoir created in 1930 when the Blue Ridge Dam was completed across the Toccoa River by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Today, the lake covers roughly 3,300 acres and is surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, making it one of North Georgia’s most scenic recreation areas.
The shoreline was incredibly peaceful during late November.
We spent nearly an hour simply walking around, enjoying the cool mountain air while Grebee explored every interesting smell he could find.
Of course, we couldn’t resist skipping stones across the calm water.
At one point, we also stacked a small rock tower along the shoreline.
A quick reminder: while rock stacking can make for fun photos, it’s always best to knock them back down afterward – as we did. Rock cairns can disrupt small habitats, alter natural landscapes, and sometimes confuse hikers who rely on official trail markers. Leaving nature as you found it helps preserve these beautiful places for everyone.
Sometimes the simplest moments become the ones you remember most.
Our Cozy Creekside Airbnb
Once check-in opened, we headed over to our Airbnb.
The cabin honestly exceeded our expectations.
It featured two main stories plus a finished basement, giving everyone plenty of room to spread out without ever feeling cramped.
One of our favorite features was the small creek running beside the property.
The constant sound of flowing water made the cabin feel incredibly relaxing, especially during chilly mornings with a cup of coffee.
If you’re visiting Blue Ridge with family or friends, we’d definitely recommend renting a cabin over staying in a hotel.
Many cabins throughout the area are tucked into the forest while still being only a short drive from downtown Blue Ridge, giving you the best of both worlds.
Walking Through Downtown Blue Ridge
Downtown Blue Ridge quickly became one of our favorite parts of the trip.
The town itself owes much of its existence to the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s. The railroad transformed what had been a small mountain settlement into an important hub for logging, mining, and tourism, helping shape the Blue Ridge visitors see today.
Today, many of those historic buildings have been restored into locally owned shops, restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and boutiques.
Since we visited during Thanksgiving weekend, nearly every storefront was decorated for Christmas.
Lights hung across downtown streets.
Garlands wrapped around lamp posts.
Christmas trees stood throughout the square.
It felt like walking through a Hallmark Christmas movie.
One thing we especially appreciated was how local everything felt.
Instead of large chain stores dominating downtown, many businesses were family-owned, giving Blue Ridge its own personality.
A Small-Town Parade We Didn’t Expect
One of the best parts of traveling is stumbling across experiences you never planned.
While exploring downtown, we suddenly noticed people lining the streets.
Not long afterward, a small local parade made its way through town.
Although we didn’t film it, it ended up being one of our favorite memories from the trip.
There were local school marching groups, community organizations, businesses, decorated vehicles, and plenty of smiling families enjoying the holiday weekend.
It reminded us why we love visiting small towns.
These are the kinds of events that aren’t designed for tourists – they’re traditions that bring the local community together, and getting to witness them made us feel like we were part of the celebration.
Riding the Blue Ridge Christmas Railway
Without question, one of the highlights of our visit was riding the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway’s holiday train.
Grebee stayed back at the cabin for this adventure.
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway operates on historic railroad tracks originally built in the late 1800s, following portions of the former Marietta and North Georgia Railroad. The modern heritage railway began operations in 1998 and has since become one of Blue Ridge’s most popular attractions.
Our holiday ride felt incredibly festive.
The train was decorated for Christmas, holiday music filled the cars, and the mountain scenery made the experience even more memorable.
Watching North Georgia’s forests roll by while relaxing aboard a historic train was something completely different from our usual vacations.
If you’re planning a Thanksgiving or Christmas trip to Blue Ridge, we’d highly recommend booking your train tickets well in advance because holiday rides are some of the railway’s most popular events and often sell out.
For us, it ended up being one of those experiences we’d happily do again.
Hiking at Project Chimps
Our final adventure brought us to one of the area’s most unique destinations – Project Chimps.
Located just outside of town, Project Chimps is a nonprofit sanctuary that provides lifelong care for chimpanzees retired from biomedical research. The sanctuary spans more than 200 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, giving the chimpanzees a peaceful, natural environment to live out the rest of their lives. While visitors don’t have direct access to the chimpanzees, the organization offers several scenic hiking trails on portions of the property, along with educational information about its mission and the animals that call the sanctuary home.
The hiking trails themselves were beautiful. Surrounded by towering trees and the quiet sounds of the forest, it was the perfect place to slow down and enjoy nature. The trails were well-maintained and offered a peaceful change of pace from the more popular attractions around Blue Ridge.
Then something completely unexpected happened.
As we continued hiking, we suddenly started hearing chimpanzees calling through the forest. The sounds echoed through the mountains, and for a moment, it honestly felt like we had stepped into a scene from Planet of the Apes. It was such a surreal experience because you don’t expect to hear chimpanzees while hiking through the mountains of North Georgia.
Even though we never saw the chimpanzees themselves, simply hearing them in the distance made the hike incredibly memorable. It was unlike any hiking experience we’ve had before and gave us an even greater appreciation for the important work Project Chimps is doing.
If you’re looking for something a little different than the typical waterfall or mountain overlook hike, Project Chimps is definitely worth adding to your Blue Ridge itinerary. It combines beautiful scenery with the opportunity to support a truly meaningful conservation and animal welfare mission.
Why Blue Ridge Became One of Our Favorite Mountain Trips
We’ve taken quite a few road trips over the years, but Blue Ridge stands out because it perfectly balances outdoor adventure with small-town charm.
During just one Thanksgiving weekend we were able to:
- Relax by beautiful Lake Blue Ridge
- Stay in a cozy creekside cabin
- Explore a festive historic downtown
- Watch an unexpected hometown parade
- Ride the Blue Ridge Christmas Railway
- Hike through the forests at Project Chimps
It never felt rushed.
Instead, the entire weekend encouraged us to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate the simple moments.
If you’re searching for an easy family getaway from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, or the Carolinas, Blue Ridge deserves a spot near the top of your list.
We certainly plan on returning someday – next time, we’ll be bringing our newest family member along to experience all of the mountain magic with us.
